Modern Garden Your bright, fashionable garden is very much an outdoor room - part of your house, where you love to eat, drink, and be sociable. It has a lively, mediterranean feel, with hot, bright colours and unusual plants with interesting flowers and foliage. You might enjoy choosing contemporary surfaces like decking or gravel, or using eyecatching containers and paint effects. It's stylish and co-ordinated, uses strong, bold lines to define different areas, and makes use of architectural plants as well as grasses, bamboos, and boldly coloured annuals and perennials. There are lots of ways to create a modern garden, but start by deciding whether you'd prefer straight, sharp, sleek lines, or a more organic, curvaceous feel. Stick with it throughout the garden for consistency, add colour on walls, fences, and seats, and then start to dress it up with some really funky plants Bamboos and grasses are amazingly good-value plants for a contemporary garden - they look fabulous all year round, move and rustle in the breeze, and come in a stunning range of slinky colours. Combine them with other spiky plants like Phormiums and Cordylines for a really stylish look. Don't just stick to spiky plants, though; a contrast of leaf shapes and sizes always looks best so mix in the broad glossy leaves of plants like fatsias and hostas. Choose brightly coloured perennials like bright orange oriental poppy 'Harvest Moon' combined with cream and green striped foliage of irises and the hot red of Crocosmia 'Lucifer'. Play to your garden's strengths by sowing brightly coloured annuals for a quick fix of colour. Try Californian poppies, which come in shades of orange and cream, and will seed itself wantonly every year, the lovely mahogany sunflower 'Velvet Queen', or Red Orache, a trendy annual if ever there was one. |
