Family Garden Your dream garden is a wonderfully spontaneous and informal space for families to relax and have fun. It's a beautifully welcoming place for all ages to sit, play, and eat, and should be a magical, stimulating, and exciting place for children. It would include a willow wigwam, have space for children to grow peas, beans, and annual flowers, and taste fruit straight from the bush. Your family garden should be entirely safe for small children, designed to withstand boisterous games, and is a garden that will grow and change with your family over the years. A family garden is fun to create and only needs a little planning to make it safe and enjoyable for all ages. Adults need a space to relax and enjoy the sun, so screen off an area with trellis and create simple raised beds to protect your plants from footballs and wild red indians! Choose strong, forgiving, yet beautiful plants that will survive energetic gardening 'help'. Escallonias, lavateras, and rugosa roses are ideal, and robust perennials like alchemilla, hardy geraniums, and Ajuga reptans are worth their weight in gold. Let the children plant climbing beans or sweet peas to smother the trellis, and you'll have a secret paradise in no time. Annuals are great fun to use in a spontaneous, informal family garden. Choose quick-growing vegetables for really fun-to-eat crops: radish, carrot, lettuce and french beans will all give you that Peter Rabbit experience! Grow giant sunflowers or pumpkins and have a family competition; carve your initials on the pumpkins when they are small and watch them grow and grow. Children need plenty of space, and it's a good idea to use tough rye grass mixture to keep your lawn looking good. It's amazingly quick and easy to create a magical living willow wigwam to play in - just plant live stems and they'll start to put out shoots almost immediately. Weave them into each other to make a wonderful green play house that'll spark their imagination over and over again. |
